Why You Should Set your Art Free

Over the years I have seen many talented artists hiding their work from the public or even from their closest friends and families. There are many reasons, however, most of the reasons I have found mainly stem from the fear of criticism and judgment, or that their work is not perfect yet or good enough to be seen by the light of day. Fear and the idea of perfection seems to be what’s stopping them from completing projects they have started and as a result, they skip from project to project without ever finishing any. I am a believer in completing projects, learning and improving each step of the way.

Below are 7 points to help overcome the fear of showing your work, perfectionism and why I think it is better to set your art free.

01. Perfection Is A MYTH

Perfection is a myth and people do not care as much as you think. This can sound a bit negative, but I see it as a positive, even as a concept, it freed me from having to worry about what other people think about my art and allow me to create freely. Those who care would most likely give you support and those who don’t would likely not respond.

02. Let Others Support You

Let the people who support you or artists you respect see your work and allow them to give you constructive criticism, it is a good way to learn.

03. Learn To Finish Your Projects

Setting your art free means finishing your project, it means going through the whole process of ideation, development, and polish. Most people start the ideation and development process but have never gone through the dip to the other side and reach the polish stage. The polish stage is the hardest part and it is also where most of the growth and learning happens. Going through the polish stage means you have the look at every detail to make sure it is right and also resolve issues that you don’t want to before.

04. Learn From Your Project

There is always the next project, all you can do is finish your project to the best of your ability at that time, learn from it, and strive to do better next time. If you have done your best in a given amount of time there is nothing more you could do.

05. Learn To Set And Keep Deadlines

Setting your art free means setting and keeping to your own deadline. Keeping your own deadline is a skill and will get better over time with practice.

06. Learn To Be Accountable

Social media is not good or bad, it is just a tool for you to use however you like. You can use it to help you keep accountable to create consistently and keep deadlines you set for yourself by giving yourself some perceived “peer pressure”.

07. Spread Joy and Inspire

If you do good work, you are spreading joy to those who like it and can be an inspiration to those who want to do the same.
